The high power medium speed marine diesel engine project
To make a compact, lightweight, efficient, versati le, economical, robust and easy to maintain engine.
Read more about it in The Motorship special servey number from June 1970.
The UDAB engine is of the four-stroke trunk
piston type with turbocharging utilizing
the gas pulse energy. The engine is designed
and suitable for operation and manoeuvring
on heavy fuel oil. It is available in V-form
with 8,10,12,14,16 and 18 cyiinders with
a continuous output of 1,000 bhp per cyiinder
at 425 rev/min. 6 and 9 cylinder in-line engines
are also being planned. Through the different
numbers of cylinders available as weil as
arrangements with a different number of units,
the engine will constitute a compact and
efficient propulsion set for all types and sizes
of ships. ln many cases the auxiliary engines
will also be replaced to some extent by the
arrangement of auxiliary power transmission
from the UDAB engine.
This engine is a monobloc unit with an
underslung crankshaft. The engine casing
is placed on the top of a base frame and the
two components form a rigid unit which will
be mounted on only four brackets directly
connected to the webs of the hull.
The installation of the engines in the ship will
thus be very simple and it will make the
engine independent of the inevitable
deformations of the ship structure caused
by variations in hydrostatic pressure under
different bad and weather conditions.
The engine has been designed with the
utmost care regarding accessibility and
maintenance of the various components.
To reduce service work on the engine
itself and to facilitate handling of the
engine parts, the cylinder cover and liner,
cooling jacket, piston and con necting rod can
all be handled as one integral unit. A special
overhead rig will lift this unit in the anguiar
direction of the cylinder and transfer it to the
workshop where an overhau led spare unit
is already prepared for installation.
The removal and fitting of such a unit
by this arrangement will take a minimum
of time, approximately one hour, and there
will normally be no need for extra spares.
